Race, Culture & Marginalised Communities
Belonging isn’t just about heritage...
...it’s about navigating and thriving in the space between competing values and divergent worlds.
I am committed to creating a safe, respectful and culturally aware space where your identity, experiences and voice are fully acknowledged and valued. As a registered and active member of BAATN, my work is informed by dynamic engagement with racially attuned and culturally aware therapeutic practice. I understand that experiences of marginalisation – whether due to race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality or overlapping identities – can shape mental health, wellbeing and the ways we relate to ourselves and others. I also recognise that your cultural background and lived experiences hold meaning and vitality that can be worked with, rather than worked against. Therapy with me aims to help you connect with these sources of strength, while navigating the challenges you face.
Being Seen and Understood
In therapy, my goal is to help you feel truly seen and understood. I listen not only to what you say but also to the lived experiences behind your words. Navigating societal prejudice, microaggressions or cultural misunderstanding can affect your emotional life, contributing to anxiety, depression, disconnection, or relational difficulties. Together, we explore these experiences, understand their impact, and work on strategies that support healing, self-expression and empowerment.
Honouring Your Identity and Experiences
I approach therapy with openness and respect, recognising that you are the expert on your own life. I am committed to understanding how your culture, background and different aspects of your identity come together to shape your experiences. For many people, this also means navigating the challenges of living between two cultural worlds and the tension that can arise when values, expectations or ways of coping differ between family, community and personal life. I also understand that in some communities, focusing on yourself or seeking support outside the family can feel difficult or even frowned upon. In therapy, we explore these experiences safely and without judgment, acknowledging both the challenges and the strengths that come from your unique background.
Integrating Cultural Strengths
Each community carries its own history, values and ways of coping with adversity. Where relevant, I bring culturally informed perspectives into therapy, helping ensure that the approach resonates with your worldview. This may include exploring family expectations, cultural norms, personal goals or understanding how historical and intergenerational experiences shape your life today. By connecting with these strengths, we can support growth, resilience and wellbeing in ways that feel authentic to you.
A Collaborative, Flexible Approach
Therapy with me is collaborative and tailored to you. It’s not about fitting your experiences into pre-existing frameworks but about co-creating a space that validates your identity, explores challenges and builds on your strengths. Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties or simply want a reflective space to process life’s challenges, I work with cultural sensitivity, care and respect.
Reclaiming Voice and Agency
I believe therapy can be a powerful space for connection, self-understanding and resilience. For individuals from marginalised communities, it can also be a space to reclaim your voice, validate your experiences and cultivate a sense of agency in a world that often overlooks or dismisses you. My aim is to walk alongside you on that journey—supporting you to navigate challenges, nurture wellbeing, and honour the full complexity of who you are.
