Trauma, Anxiety & Abuse
Trauma isn’t about the wounding event itself…
...it’s about what that event left behind.
Trauma is the long shadow of cracks, fragments and the loss of safety that fuels anxiety-driven coping mechanisms. You’re still here but your shape and function might feel different. Different does not mean broken. It means you adapted to survive. Healing doesn’t mean plastering over the cracks. It means gently reworking what has been fractured, allowing a new wholeness to take shape. Not a simple mending but a robust rebuilding, with depth, strength and meaning that honours what you’ve lived through.
Trauma shapes what your mind and body have learned to expect — from relationships, from the world and from yourself. In therapy, I focus on creating a steady, reliable relationship where these patterns can be gently noticed and understood. Together, we work at a pace that feels right for you, helping overwhelming experiences become more thinkable, integrated, and less alone.
Understanding the Patterns You Had to Create
When life is marked by fear, neglect, inconsistency or intrusion, it can quietly shape the way you relate to yourself and others later. These experiences often live on in automatic, relational reflexes – pulling away without meaning to, over-adapting to keep the peace, bracing for impact or feeling on edge before you can explain why. Anxiety predictably threads through these patterns, colouring everyday life.
In therapy, we explore these responses with care and curiosity. I don’t approach them as flaws or failings but respectfully as adaptations you developed to survive. Together in counselling we gently trace how these patterns formed and how they continue to influence your sense of self and your relationships. As we do this, your nervous system gradually begins to relearn what it means to feel genuinely safe and grounded.
A Relationship That Helps You Rebuild Safety
Therapy isn’t a set of techniques done to you – it’s something we create together. The relationship between us becomes part of the healing. Trauma often reappears in subtle, interpersonal moments between us:-
- A sudden withdrawal
- A shift in tone, a feeling of tension
- An anxious sense that you may have done something “wrong”
When these moments happen, we notice them together, gently and without judgment. These shared reflections can open the door to new experiences of being met, understood and securely connected. Over time, these relational moments help reshape what feels possible for you in the outside world.
Making Sense of Your Emotional World
Trauma can disrupt your ability to understand what you feel or to read the intentions of others, leaving daily life confusing and full of self-doubt. In therapy sessions, we slow things down so you can think clearly about what is happening inside you and between you and others. As you begin to understand your emotional world more fully – with me alongside you – you will notice a growing sense of clarity, steadiness and relief.
Learning to Hold Your Feelings Without Being Overwhelmed
A central part of my work is providing containment: helping you hold feelings that may once have felt too intense, frightening or unmanageable. Trauma can push the nervous system into extremes – either flooding you with emotion or shutting everything down. Together, we gradually make these inner experiences more nameable, understandable and bearable. As this sense of containment grows, so does your capacity to hold onto yourself in difficult moments without becoming overwhelmed, dissociated or engulfed by anxiety. This becomes an internal anchor – something you can rely on both inside and outside the therapy room.
Moving Toward a Life That Feels More Fully Your Own
Across all our work, my aim is simple: to help you feel safer inside your mind, steadier in your relationships and more connected to the life you want to live. Healing doesn’t happen in isolation – it happens between us, in the moments of trust, understanding and connection we create together. Through this relational process, your sense of self can grow stronger, freer and more at home in the world.
